The PLAY - CREATIVE GAMING FESTIVAL invited all enthusiasts for gameculture and interactive arts from October 31 - November 6, 2022, to explore the creative potentials of games in a hybrid form online and on site in Hamburg. Workshops, exhibitions, shows, the Creative Gaming Awards and playful community formats offered a week of participation, discussion, programming, exploration, and, of course, gaming.

Breathe in. Exhale. This time the whole festival revolved around the theme TAKE A BREATH, focusing on games and forms of play that make us stop, stand still and reflect. What leads us to these moments and helps us to find what we need for a satisfied, relaxed and happy life, to set goals and to focus? Together, we considered how everyday pressures can be faced and how working and living conditions have an impact on the topics, messages and environments of interactive media and art.

Workshops, Trainings & Creative Gaming Studio

Home Visits (Hausbesuche)

You're invited too!

This year, we will once again have the opportunity to visit people from different areas of the gaming and streaming world and gain insights into their work. The digital home visits will take place from 01 - 05 November at 11 am each day.

Speakers' Corner

This could be your stage!

The Speakers' Corner is our stage for everyone: From November 1 - 4, at 2 pm, the game ideas developed in the school and festival workshops will be presented here. In addition, anyone who wants to talk about games can sign up for a slot on November 1 - 3 and November 6.

Thanks for your submissions - All slots are filled and can now be viewed in the program.

Shows & Interactions

Challenge accepted!

For those looking for a challenge, the Hybrid Challenges on October 31 are the place to be. Here, festival attendees will compete against people online in multiplayer games on site. As a suitable Halloween event, a horror game evening will be held on the festival site from 7 - 9 pm on October 31. The following evenings will be more relaxed with "Walk With Me": From 01 - 03 November, at 7 pm each evening, we will take walks together in video games and talk about experiences, stories and visions. On the last day of the festival at 3 pm., there will be an interactive show in which the usual rules of pen & paper will be broken: JengaRPG.

Friday evening we welcome OddNina and Alistair Aitcheson on stage, who invite to be part of a live game design show, at "THE ULTIMATE TOURNAMENT". Creativity and playfulness continue on Saturday: Alistair Aitcheson calls on the audience to participate in his Show "The Crowd-Controlled Creativity Show!" from 4 - 5 pm. If you want to get your mind and body in sync beforehand, try GTA Yoga at 3 pm! The Awards Show (November 05, 8pm) will once again be a highlight of the festival. Before the ceremony, there will be a Live Let’s Play with this year’s nominees. At the Finissage on Sunday at 5 p.m. we will take a look back at the festival week and wrap up PLAY22 together.

Online? On-site? Hybrid!

PLAY how you like!

Almost all program points can be experienced in the online stream, in the virtual PLAYvalley or at this year's festival site on the 2nd floor of JUPITER (Mönckebergstraße 2/4, formerly Karstadt Sport)! How can we welcome you to the opening of PLAY22, including the guided tour through this year's exhibition, on October 31 at 12pm?

PLAYvalley
The PLAYvalley is the digital festival location. Here, all streams can be followed and the on-site festival can be visited through cameras. The exhibition can not only be viewed, but to a large extent also played with directly. It is also a fantastic place to meet the team, the artists and other guests. Just open it in your browser (not on mobile phones/tablets), log in and go exploring alone or with friends! The PLAYvalley is always open.

On-site
On the 2nd floor of the Jupiter (Mönckebergstraße 2/4, formerly Karstadt Sport) you will find the complete festival program, consisting of workshops, hands-on activities, lectures and shows as well as the nominees of the Creative Gaming Awards and the exhibition with creative and innovative indiegames, which invite you to play together.

Our partners are great!

Join the Ultimate Tournament
like our partners:

We met with the partners of PLAY22, asked them, among other things, why they and their institution are participating in PLAY and, in keeping with this year's motto "Take a Breath," also talked with them a bit about pausing and games.

At the end of the interviews, Dennis Schoubye (Gamecity Hamburg), Heiko Müller (Youth Information Center Hamburg) and Yuliya Grechukhina (BürgerStiftung Hamburg) each pack a game element for the Ultimate Tournament (November 4, 8 p.m.) with OddNina and Alistair Aitcheson on stage.
